COVID-19 has been found to stay viral on some surfaces for up to 17 days, while some studies are suggesting even longer. Studies now show that hard surfaces pass germs more readily than porous surfaces. A door knob will transfer disease more readily than paper money because the paper is a fiber that can trap the contagion making it less likely to transfer to the next person.

It's important to understand the difference between traditional cleaning and disinfecting a facility.

Definitions

Cleaning: the removal of visible soil, debris, microorganisms and organic substance from surfaces; will not eliminate germs but reduces their numbers by removing some contaminated matter.

Disinfection: the elimination of pathogens and disease-causing microorganisms, except bacterial spores.

There are two reasons to clean; clean for appearance or clean for health. If you clean for health, that will take care of appearance. Cleaning the dirt on a surface will make it look shiny, but that doesn't mean that surface is healthy. Simply wiping down surfaces, without correctly disinfecting, can actual spread viruses. Proper disinfection often requires that the solution be allowed to have a proper kill time. Spraying disinfection on a surface and then immediately wiping off the chemical, will not allow the proper kill time, often leaving the virus alive on the surface and even transferring the virus to the cloth used to wipe the surface. If that cloth is then used to wipe other surfaces, this could actually just be causing cross-contamination.
